Day 1: THESSALONIKI – ATHENS – CAIRO
Meet at the airport and fly to Egypt, the cradle of a great civilization that shaped the course of humanity. Arrival in the capital city with its thousand minarets, the bustling Cairo, with its millions of inhabitants. Check-in at the hotel. Overnight stay.
Day 2: CAIRO – MEMPHIS – SAKKARA
Breakfast. Our day begins with a tour of Islamic Cairo. The Saladin Citadel was the strongest castle of the early Islamic period and consists of three sections: The lower wall, El Azab (northern wall) and El Anqisariya. Within this magnificent area of Citadel lies the mosque of Muhammad Ali, famous for its Rococo architecture, which we will visit. We continue to the ancient capital of Egypt, Memphis, and Saqqara with the first step pyramid of Djoser, a pyramid of astonishing beauty. Lunch at a local restaurant and return to the hotel. Free afternoon. Overnight stay.
Day 3: CAIRO - ALEXANDRIA
Breakfast and departure for Alexandria. Arrival and tour of the city, starting with the Greco-Roman Museum. The twenty rooms are built around a courtyard where statues, funerary steles, and sarcophagi housing the heritage of Alexandrian civilization are exhibited. An amazing coexistence of Egyptian, Greek, and Roman cultures echoes the cosmopolitan style of the city in the past. We continue with a visit to Cavafy's house, the catacombs carved into the rock on three levels. Then we have lunch at a traditional and renowned restaurant in Alexandria. We continue with a tour of the Library of Alexandria, an architectural masterpiece. Lunch at a local restaurant. Return to Cairo. Overnight stay.
Day 4: CAIRO
Breakfast and start of our tour, beginning with the Archaeological Museum with its priceless Pharaonic masterpieces. Today, all the grandeur of an ancient civilization is presented before us. We continue with the Pyramids of Giza, one of the seven wonders of the world, and the huge and enigmatic Sphinx, and finally we will visit the perfume and papyrus workshop. Once our tour is complete, we will have lunch at a traditional restaurant in Cairo. We will then visit the picturesque oriental bazaar of Khan El Khalili. Here you can buy fabrics, leather goods, baklava, silverware, gold jewelry, and other items. Lunch at a local restaurant. Return to the hotel. Overnight stay.
Day 5: CAIRO
Breakfast and departure to visit the Holy Church of St. George the Trophy Bearer, which is a place of pilgrimage for the Arab world, both Christian and Muslim. Here is also the Holy Cave where the Holy Family stayed during their flight to Egypt. Next, we will visit the Church of St. Nicholas, where the cell of St. Nektarios is located. Lunch at a local restaurant. Optional cruise on the Nile River. Overnight stay.
DAY 06 CAIRO – ATHENS – THESSALONIKI
Breakfast and departure for Cairo airport and flight to Thessaloniki via Athens.
